How Can I Keep My Teeth White?

Who can blame us? Our society today places a high value on a nice smile, and who can blame us? With advances in modern dentistry, we are more aware than ever of the importance of maintaining our oral health and smiles.

If you’re like many people, you’ve noticed how the emphasis on a pearly smile has shifted dramatically over the last fifteen years. Simply watching a television show or movie from before the year 2000 will reveal a lot more “yellow” smiles than we see today. It was once considered normal to have yellow teeth, but that is no longer the case, and white teeth are increasingly becoming the norm rather than the exception.

You may never have used an in-office bleaching treatment by Raleigh orthodontics before, or you may have done so for years. In any event, you want to maintain the benefits of your prior treatments as much as possible. After all, you know that every day at home and while living your life, you can do something to improve the effects of your treatment or speed up staining.

Here’s our advice for keeping your smile as bright as possible for as long as possible:

1. Take good care of your mouth

Excellent oral hygiene is the first line of defense against tooth stains. This means brushing your teeth as soon as you wake up (to remove bacteria that has accumulated overnight), and brushing your teeth immediately after eating, especially if you eat or drink foods or beverages that are known to stain teeth.Replace your regular toothpaste with tooth whitening toothpaste, and floss your teeth at least once a day to remove plaque. If you have teeth whitening gels or rinses, use them at least once a day.

2. Consume plenty of water

The majority of brown stains on teeth are caused by drinking coffee or soda, which contain a high level of acidity. Your mouth contains approximately six hard tissues (two on top, two on the bottom, and one on each side). These tissues absorb liquids such as water; other fluids such as coffee or soda can cause stains by leaving mineral deposits that are difficult to remove with brushing or rinsing alone.

3. Avoid foods that stain.

Avoid teeth-staining foods like coffee, chocolate, colas, red wine, black tea, dark berries, and curry if you want to keep your teeth white. If you don’t want to give up any of your favorite foods, make sure to rinse your mouth with water and brush it immediately after consuming staining foods or beverages. Just keep in mind that if you drink coffee or wine on a regular basis, or eat berries frequently, the deeply pigmented molecules in these items will stain your teeth.

4. Arrange for follow-up visits.

Keep in mind that if you have your teeth whitened at the dentist, they will not stay that way indefinitely. Following an in-office bleaching treatment, your dentist will most likely provide you with a whitening kit to use at home. You’ll need to use this whitening kit to keep your teeth white. Drinking red wine, eating fresh berries, consuming dark-colored sodas, smoking, and poor oral hygiene may necessitate more frequent visits to the dentist for a touch-up.
